Special Broadcast Summary: CrowdStrike Outage
Good morning, Security Gang! Happy Friday, or maybe not so happy given today's news. We're waking up to a significant issue caused by an update from CrowdStrike that has paralyzed airports, banks, media companies, and more. This outage is currently only affecting Windows systems, leaving Linux and Mac devices unaffected.
CrowdStrike's Falcon endpoint update, essential for their MDR, XDR, and EDR antivirus solutions, had a glitch impacting Windows workstations and servers, resulting in the notorious blue screen of death. CrowdStrike has issued a technical alert with steps to resolve the issue: boot Windows into safe mode or the recovery environment, navigate to the crash directory, locate and delete the problematic .sys file, then reboot normally. However, this solution requires local access, complicating matters for remote machines.
The impact is significant, causing concerns and prompting many to question if it was a cyber attack. CrowdStrike's share price has dropped, presenting a potential buying opportunity as they are expected to recover swiftly.
The incident raises questions about CrowdStrike's QA process. It's essential for them to conduct a transparent investigation and share their findings to help the cybersecurity community learn and improve. Despite the frustration, it's unlikely customers will switch to competitors unless they were already on the brink of doing so.
CrowdStrike remains a crucial partner for many, and it's important to support them through this challenge. The issue is isolated to Windows devices, so Microsoft is not under attack, although they are affected due to the widespread use of Windows.
We'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. Have a great weekend and stay cyber safe! Connect with us on social media and subscribe to our podcast for the latest updates.
